May 21 - Lambs Canyon Road

On my way home from the Jordanelle wetlands, I decide to pass by the Mormon Trail and stop once again at Lambs Canyon. The road is still closed so it's a walk up the road again to the trail head.

It's still sunny and I'm thinking I might actually get to walk the entire trail in the sun for a change.

Before I even go around the gate, I stop at a gravelly spot and there are a few Rocky Mt Duskywings flying around.

I head around the gate and up the road when I see that those predicted afternoon storms are definitely building and it most likely won't be a totally sunny walk. But it's been sunny and the temps are in the mid-60s so the butterflies should be flying.

Many more Bluebells, Ragwort and Yellow blooming. But there are a few new bloomers including Geraniums, Wallflower

and Sweet Pea.

I stop at several wet sandy/gravel areas to find parties of Blues!

Mostly Western Tailed Blues with a few Spring Azures and Silvery Blues in there too! (No Silvery Blue in this photo though.)

Along with the Blues in one area are more Rocky Mt Duskywings. And it always pays to look at everything when I find a single Sleepy Duskywing

with those Rocky Mts.

I also see an Anise Swallowtail and 2 Western Tiger Swallowtails. And I can't forget the 5 Orangetips!

A little more than 1/2 way up, my sun turns to cloudy with peeks of sun. :(

I reach the trail head and check the mud puddles around the parking lot. I see a few Rocky Mt Duskywings and a surprise --- a Two Banded Skipper!

I've seen them before but never in my 6 seasons walking Lambs Canyon! In fact, it's not even on the Utah Lep's species list for Lamb's Canyon!

On the way down, there is less flying even the butterfly parties have broken up. But I do see 2 Mourning Cloaks.

Great stop! Great day!
