Heading out after work for a quick hike. Not too many non-snowy options at this time of year. I usually head up to Millcreek Canyon to hike the Desolation Trail to Salt Lake Overlook but I'm not feeling hiking on a mix of snow/ice and dry ground so I'm trying something new and heading up Rattlesnake Gulch. This is a 3.5 mile round-trip with around 700 ft of elevation gain all in the first 3/4 mile.
The day is near 60 degrees but cloudy as yet another storm rolls in tomorrow.
The trail head is about 0.7 miles after the Millcreek pay station. Several cars already here.
Trail is dry and uphill. Grandeur Peak is towering ahead.
Really not too exciting as I head up the gulch as the Spring flowers are not yet present. But for some reason there are tons of old shells along the trail. Not just in one spot; along almost the entire trail.
Soon I reach the trail intersection (and the end of the climb).
To the right is the Pipeline Trail heading towards the Grandeur Peak trail and to the left, continues the Pipeline Trail. I'm heading left.
After a very short rise, the trail becomes level as it is now cut out from the mountain slopes - 700 ft below is the bottom of the canyon - at least it's not a straight drop-off. Across canyon to the south are lovely snowy peaks.
The trail just winds along the curves in the mountain sides.
I do find a flower blooming. Not sure what it is.
I also find a few Waterleaf plants coming up.
Somewhat eerie views of the valley as I head back to the mouth of Millcreek Canyon.
And then as I reach some junipers, I also reach tons of a very lovely but very invasive plant - the Spurge.
It's a big problem along the foothills here. And this one section of trail, they have pretty much taken over.
Thankfully, it's just a very short section of trail.
Soon I finally reach the overlook. To the northwest, downtown Salt Lake.
To the southwest,
Behind me to the east towers Grandeur Peak some 2000 ft above.
And to the south, snowy peaks.
Time to head home.
